Back in Athens after my studies at ETH Zurich, on a few weekends I worked for fun through a book on PHP 5 and MySQL, and implemented a forum for my remote friends and classmates. The forum was self-hosted on a Sun Ultra 10 running the Sparc64 port of Debian 3.2, and on a residential ADSL connection with a dynamic IP and dynamic DNS on DynDNS.com (long before duckdns.org was available). To save on the power bill, the server was plugged into a timer that turned it on every day at 19:00 local time, while a root cronjob turned it off automatically 3 hours later.
